Damascus Township Honors Howard Schuchman
October, 2011 - - Damascus Township Board of Supervisors Jeff Dexter presented a plaque of appreciation to Howard Schuchman at the October, 2011 Supervisors Meeting. Howard has been an active member of the Zoning Hearing Board for 23 years and has served as Chairman for many of those years.
Howard also helped to create, and coordinated, the Supervisors For A Day program with the Damascus School. The program enables four exceptional eighth grade students each year to spend a day with the Supervisors to learn about local government and to learn more about the Township. The students also attend a regular monthly meeting and participate in the meeting, making decisions and voting on issues (under the guidance of the Supervisors) for a practical and enjoiyable learning experience.
He also coordinates the Annual Fourth Grade visit to the Township so the class can learn about local government. After the class completes the visit the students are invited to participate in a poster contest. The creators of the top four posters receive municipal bond prizes for their efforts. Howard actively seeks out local business sponsors for this program.
An active member of the Lake Huntington Fire Department, Howie has served for many years as the Treasurer and Fire Police Captain. In addition, he has coordinated the Fire Prevention Week visits to Damascus School from the Beach Lake Fire Company, Equinunk Fire Company, Lake Huntington Fire Department and the Damascus Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Our hats off and our sincerest thanks for everything he has done to make our community a better place.
Calkins 4H Recognized For Their River Cleanup Efforts
October, 2011 - - Each year the National Park Service helps organizations that help keep the Delaware River clean through an agreement with Damascus Township. At the October, 2011 meeting, the Calkins 4H received a check for $500.00 from Chairman Jeff Dexter for their work cleaning a section of the River.
Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Take Their Toll
September 2011 - - The one-two punch of Irene and Lee wreaked havoc in the Township. The winds of Irene knocked down trees and powerlines affecting nearly everyone in the Township. Fallen trees blocked roads, broke powerlines and poles, damaged houses and cars. Ditches and sluice pipes were blocked causing the rain to wash out roads.
The Township crews with the help of the Beach Lake Fire Company and the Equinunk Fire Company managed to clear the roads of fallen trees in a matter of hours. Township roads and state roads were all open for travel in at least one direction by the end of the day. Cleanup of the mess took two more days to remove all the trees from the roads. The Township crews were hampered by the fallen wires.
The scope of the damage was huge. The electric company sent crews out, but in some cases, it was days before power was restored.

Before the cleanup work was done, and before the roads and ditches could be repaired, and pipes cleaned, Tropical Storm Lee brought several inches of rain to the area. Two roads were washed out and there was a mudslide. All the roads suffered from driving surface erosion damage and roadside ditch deep erosion, some much more severe than others. The rain water simply overwhelmed the already damaged drainage systems.

Wayne County was a declared disaster area for both storm events, and FEMA and PEMA reimbursements have been requested to help the Township repair the roads.
