DAMASCUS MANOR COMMUNITY CENTER
The
Damascus Manor Community Center has been pleased to offer a variety of events
for the community to enjoy in recent years. These have included seasonal
monthly pancake breakfasts, Halloween haunted houses and trunk or treats,
yard sales, and others. Last year our Penny Social was commended as the
best in the area by the River Reporter, and we sponsored our first bus tour
which brought members of the community to the Finger Lakes to taste wine and see
the foliage on a beautiful October Saturday.
DMCC
also rents out the left-hand side of the building for private
events.
In
planning activities, DMCC welcomes community participation and seeks sufficient
interest to break even financially, and to justify our volunteers’
efforts. It also goes without saying that our events are conducted in a
responsible manner with attention to health and safety
requirements.
Unfortunately, coronavirus has made 2020 a year like no
other for Damascus Township, as it has for the entire world. Although DMCC
members join the rest of the community in welcoming positive developments, there
still does not exist locally circumstances, where events can be held with full
safety for all, where health requirements will not detract from enjoyment of
events or needed attendance to prevent financial losses, or where community
interest can be gauged. DMCC members have benefited from generosity of
numerous merchants in past years, but we do not feel comfortable asking for
donations from businesses that endured mandated closures. DMCC volunteers
spend weeks or months planning some of our events and we do not want to invite
complications that might accompany new coronavirus developments. DMCC’s
usual policy of giving renters keys to our premises, and letting them handle
preparation and cleaning, has worked well in the past, but is a cause for
concern in the present environment.
In light of the current
situation, the DMCC Board members voted on May 21, not to sponsor any events
in the 2020 year, and not to offer our premises for rental. Although
this is unfortunate, and might disappoint some in the community, it felt to us
the most responsible means of proceeding. And of course, we are
hopeful that 2021 will be a return to an environment similar to that in the
past, and look forward to seeing members of the community enjoying or
volunteering to help with that the DMCC has to offer. Until then, enjoy
the beauty and experiences of Damascus and be
healthy.
